Vedan (Vietnam) Enterprise Corp. Ltd.

Company Profile
Vedan Vietnam was established in 1991, it is located about 70 kilometers southeast of the Ho Chi Minh City, the biggest city in Vietnam, in Phuoc Thai Village, Long Thanh District of Dong Nai Province.

At present, operating plants and facilities include MSG plant, starch and glucose syrup plant, Modified Starch plant, chlor-alkali plant, lysine plant, co-generating power plant, three advanced sewage treatment systems, a 60,000 m3 water reservoir, Vedan Phuoc Thai port, and exclusive roads that provide connection to the public road system, as well as administrative, housing and recreational facilities.

Operational Profile
MSG Plant
Through the employment of highly advanced biotechnology, production technique and equipment, this plant produces world-class MSG using raw materials that are harvested locally – cassava and sugarcane molasses. The plant also produces glutamic acid; an amino acid used by pharmaceutical companies and food manufacturers. Apart from domestic consumption, MSG manufactured by this plant is also exported to all over the world. The output from this plant has surpassed that of Vedan Taiwan and become the world’s largest MSG plant.

Starch and Glucose Syrup Plant
With a capacity to process up to 1,000,000 tons of cassava per year, this installation not only produces highest quality starch and glucose syrup, it also provides steady income streams for the local farmers. At present, in addition to tapioca starch and Modified Starch, glucose syrup is also extracted from semi-finished starch during production via flusher drying, liquefaction and saccharinfication to supply the MSG and lysine plants as raw materials for their respective production needs.

Apart from the operating starch plant in Phuoc Thai in Dong Nai Province, Phuoc Long in Binh Phuoc Province and An Khe in Gia Lai Province, Vedan also plans to further expand the starch production to other provinces, it is foreseeable that such expansion will play a pivotal role in the economic development of Vietnam. Currently, Vedan is the largest cassava starch producer in Vietnam.

Since 1999, Vedan has expanded into high value added Modified Starch production. More than 40 variety of Modified Starch products are now producing in this plant to serve the paper industry, textile industry and food processing industry.

Chlori-alkali Plant
The main raw material used in this plant is industrial salt, which is supplied by Cana salt fields in Ninh Thuan Province and also from Australia, each year the plant consumes about 100,000 tons of industrial salt. The production process involves the dissolution of salt and follows by electrolysis to separate sodium and chlorine. These two elements are further processed to produce NaOH, HCl and Hypochlorite. The plant adopts strict quality control so the products are highly pure in quality and meet food grade requirement. Apart from internal consumption, the products are supplied to external manufacturers as well. These chemical compounds, of which are vital ingredients of numerous products, have directly and positively contributed to the development of chemical industry in Vietnam.

Lysine Plant
This plant was founded under technology co-operation with Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Corporation Ltd. of Japan. Lysine is an essential amino acid and a major additive in animal feedstuff, and global demand on lysine is high. The successful hardware setting of the large scale equipment relies totally on the close co-operation of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese staff. At present, the entire output of this production facility is exported to Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, China and Europe. However, if the demand for such additive in Vietnam increase in the future, additional production line could be installed with relatively ease to boost the output. As such the plant is relatively well positioned to become the major supplier for Vietnam’s animal feed producers.

Co-generating Power Plant
Such project was undertaken in response to the shortage of power supply in Vietnam. In addition the installation of co-generating power plants to supplement the existing capacity is also fast becoming a global consensus. This power plant uses heat energy generated by heavy oil combustion to heat up ultra-pure water to get high-pressured and high temperature superheated steam, in order to turn the extraction condensing type turbine, thus driving the generator and generating electricity for the company’s own production need, and any excess is sold to Vietnam Electricity Company to compensate the electricity shortage in Vietnam.

Vedan Phuoc Thai Port
To facilitate the transportation of the company’s products and the supply of raw materials, the management decided to build its own Vedan Phuoc Thai port along the side of a nearby Thi Vai river. With unreserved support pledged by the Vietnamese authority and after two years of hard work by the Vedan staff, the construction of this self-financed port managed to proceed smoothly. Since its inception, the port not only greatly reduces the cost of transporting goods and increases efficiency; it also brings about much industrial and economical development in the region along the river. The port is capable of docking two 12,000 ton cargo freighters concurrently, and is divided into two parts – one for the handling of liquid goods, the other for solids. Moreover, the Vietnamese government has constructed a port eight kilometers downstream of Vedan Phuoc Thai Port with capacity of docking 40,000 ton cargo freighter, and planned to build a port near Vung Tau harbour for the docking of 200,000 ton cargo freighters will, upon completion, further enhance the infrastructure of marine transportation.
